On the 23rd June, Danes celebrate Midsummer´s Eve or Sankt Hans Aften fest with bonfires, barbecues, midsummer songs and “witch burnings”. The traditional Sankt Hans song “Vi elsker vort land” (we love our country) is heard after the bonfire is lit. Originally a celebration of the summer solstice and a tradition dating back to pagan times, Sankt Hans Aften is a lively event where you should participate, if you are trying to get into Danish life, just like me. In the photos, you will see the pre-celebration of the witch burning, where a 3-man band sang famous songs while people were sunbathing, lying on the grass with hot dogs and beer.
The witch burning is kind of brutal to me (we have similar traditions in Greece), so I didn’t stay to shoot. But maybe next year I’ll join that 🙂
